The Senate Labor Committee canceled the hearing on SB900 that was scheduled for May 14. The status of the bill on the California State Legislature website now reads, "May 14 set for first hearing canceled at the request of author".
CoPTIC has subsequently tweeted "deep disappointment that state lawmakers on the Senate Labor Committee today ignored the voices of thousands of translators and interpreters throughout California and shelved #SB900". Along with the American Translators Association, it was working to improve the bill to better reflect the reality of language industry professionals.
In the meantime, the California State Assembly Committee on Labor and Employment today had two other bills to hear from the author of AB5, State Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez. Bills AB 1850 and 2257 on the Assembly agenda for May 20 were listed as the matters of worker classification: employees and independent contractors in professional services. The outcome of the hearing is not known yet.
